: I inherited a full set of delicate floral China with these markings on the back:
:
: CH Field Haviland Limoges
: GDA France
: J.McD.&S.Co.
: does anyone know what each of these notations mean?
The best explaination is in Nora Travis's book, "Evolution Of Haviland China".
Charles Field Haviland produced china starting in 1868 (there is a list of backmarks in this book).
Then he joined with Gerard, Dufraisseix and Morel (GDM under CFH mark) in 1881. Charles dies in 1896.
In 1891 the firm of Dufraisseix & Abbot of New York joined the GDM of Limoges to
form GDA.
J.McD.&S.Co was a retailer that the china was produced For - located in Boston
(Haviland Collectors Internationale Foundation has a retailer backmark listing,
that I am quoting from).
